Nikola Tesla was considered a genius on many scientific fronts.

In 1882 he discovered the rotating magnetic field, which lead to a group of US patents later on in 1888. These patents gave us the alternating current (AC) power system we still use today. This one distinction alone earned him the moniker “The Man Who Invented the 20th Century”.

However, his research and discoveries went far beyond things with which the average person is familiar. He’s the recognized inventor of the following groundbreaking innovations:

• Radio
• Remote control by radio
• Super-conductivity
• Fluorescent lighting
• Blade-less turbine engine and pump
• Capacitor discharge ignition system for automotive engines
• Mechanical oscillator
• And dozens of others

He also discovered that useful energy could be extracted from the heat of the ambient air, and that electric power in the form of radiant energy could be broadcast to everyone in the world through the ground.

“The Problem of Increasing Human Energy”, a fantastic Tesla article first published in Century Illustrated Magazine (June 1900), he profiles the “energy situation” like no one had before.

After giving consideration to every known method of collecting energy from our natural surroundings, he dove into the unconventional and unknown. First, he postulated a machine that could collect heat from the ambient air around us. He called it a “Self-acting Engine”, since it would be able to run indefinitely from the solar energy stored in the air. He referred to it as “the ideal way of obtaining motive power”.

For many years, Tesla worked on solving all the technical issues involved with bringing this idea into reality. His work with liquified air, his discovery of super-conductivity at ultra-low temperatures, his blade-less turbine and mechanical oscillator were all spin-offs from his work on the ambient air “self-acting engine.

He was absolutely convinced it would work. He also believed it was the most efficient way to capture and use solar energy.

Tesla’s World Power System was his most famous project designed to provide free energy to everyone worldwide. It was a method of transmitting electrical energy wirelessly through the ground. While he never completed his work in this area, his dream of providing energy to all points on the globe is still alive today.
